Saturday Solutions: Homemade Furniture Polish

A friend of mine gave me some really awesome little books that give great tips for using things around your house.  When I read that I could make my very own all natural furniture polish I just had to give it a whirl!

Here is the Recipe:

  • 1/2 of Pure Vegetable Oil (I used Canola because that is what I had on hand)
  • 1/4 cup of Lemon Juice
  • Empty Spray Bottle or Jar with a Lid

You just pour in the oil and lemon juice into the empty spray bottle, shake and you are ready to go!  I actually doubled my recipe and it was still great. It is so easy that your kids could even mix it up for ya.  The Lil' Chef mixed up mine.  (Thanks Lil' Chef!!)

I have been using it for several weeks and really like it.  I use it on my bookcases, all my oak furniture as well as on my china cabinet.  I did find that I DO NOT like it on my kitchen table.  It is definitly cheaper than your average wood cleaner and safer for your home and YOUR LUNGS : )

A while back I also posted about another non-toxic homemade cleaner that I made if you want to check it out.  I use it EVERYDAY!!

Interesting! Do you find that it leaves anything feeling oily? Why don't you like it on the table? I am thinking my table is so old (hence why it always has a table cloth) that maybe the wood would soak up some of the oil and look better???

Hi Mary - Along while back I tried to polish my wood with just oil (silly me) and it was very oily
.
I think that adding the lemon juice kind of cuts the oil and makes a huge difference.

I cleaned yesterday and I just wiped my hand across my bookcase, which is not real wood, and it is fine. On my antique oak stuff the oil just soaks in.

As far as my kitchen table, I think it might smear because of the finish and because there is always activity there.

You could make a small batch and test it on your different furniture pieces. I would try it on your kitchen table for sure! I used it on a roll top desk we have and it did it wonders.

I hope that it works for you!
