His Eye Is on the Sparrow

words by Civilla D. Martin

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for Heav’n and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain
I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

Let not your heart be troubled, His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain

What an encouraging song to meditate on during times of trials and troubles.  What comfort and peace to know that "His eye is on the Sparrow, and I know He watches me."

This song reminded me of these scriptures...
Luke 12:6-7
 6Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
 7But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Luke 10:29-31
 29Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
 30But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
 31Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

You can listen to the song and learn how it originated here.

This song reminds me of my old church. We had a gentleman that would sing this every so often and I love the song. Reminds me that we are very very important to God.
