TOS Crew: Times Alive

Through the TOS Crew we were asked to review the Times Alive Multiplication CD by City Creek Press.  We were pretty excited about it because it was quite different then plain ol' flash cards and math drills.

Photobucket

Times Alive is a multiplication program, based on the Times Tables the Fun Way Book for Kids, that teaches facts from the zero's through the nine times tables.  This program is much, much more than math drills! Hard to learn math facts are illustrated in the form of a story.  The idea is that the children will learn the story and then recall the mental image and remember the answer to the fact.

Photobucket

I had the Lil' Chef working on this program and it seems to really be working for her.  Here's what I liked about Times Alive:
  • In just a short time, I have already noticed an improvement on her multiplication memorization.
  • Times Alive holds her interest.  Some of the stories are corny, but in a very cute sort of way.  Many times she has really liked one of the stories and has called me over to check it out.
  • I do not have to hound, beg or bribe her to go do the program.  She actually does it willingly!!
  • Several of the math facts are remembered by little tricks, she LOVES this.
  • I think it is pretty affordable.  For $44.95 (the download version) you have the program forever and for however many children you have.  In other words I really like that it is a flat fee and not a monthly fee.  My pockie purse likes this too!
  • While I have not reviewed the companion items for Times Alive they look really good.  They have a workbook, music cd, and clue cards.
  • Last but not least, Times Alive is really FUN!

There really isn't anything about Time alive that we didn't like or thought they could improve on.  I do recommend this program for a child working on their times tables and definitely for one who is struggling.

Photobucket

As a member of the TOS Crew, we were given the Times Alive program at no cost for review purposes.  However, the fact that this product was given to us did not in anyway effect my opinion.

Saturday Solutions: Natural Eye Make Up Remover

If you use water proof mascara then you too have probably thought of using a pressure washer to get that stuff off.  Don't get me wrong, I am thankful that I can get in a pool, cry at a movie or from laughing so hard that I almost, well you know, and not have to worry about looking like a raccoon afterwards.

I found a cheap inexpensive way to remove that stuff with out spending lots of cash, or using harmful chemicals near my eyeballs.  Simply put a little bit of extra virgin olive oil on a wash rag, Q-tip or cotton ball and wipe it off.

Not only does it remove mascara but it removes eye shadow and liner as well.  As a bonus it conditions your lashes and moisturizes around your eyes : )

If you wanna see the olive oil in action check out this video I found on youtube.

If it's not one thing....

I know I have been a little quiet over here.  I have not been feeling super great, I have like a upper respitory infection/cough thing going on.  On top of that lovely news I have a virus in both of my eyes, not pink eye.  Friday I went to the eye doctor and was told that in addition to taking medication for my eyes I am NOT allowed to wear my contacts for a while.  And IF I should decided to go back to them they need to be the kind that I dispose of daily.

Did he really just say IF???  I have been wearing contacts since I was like 10.  I really do not function well with glasses on.  Truly, it is a different way of seeing and I am VERY used to my very much loved contacts.   When I told him this, he politely smiled and told me I had been spoiled.

So, off I go for a new pair of glasses, with transition lenses because my eyes are even more sensitive to the light that usual due to this lovely little infection that I have going on.

Once I got my new glasses I realized that the prescription was off.  I am having a hard time seeing street signs, billboards and of course my computer screen.  Yes, my computer screen.  See how I am squinting to see what it is I am typing.  No fun at all!!

Back to the doctors I went for the correct prescription and now of course that means I am waiting for my new glasses.  Prayerfully these will be better for my eyeballs.  : )

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

by Charles Wesley

O for a thousand tongues to sing

My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life, and health, and peace.

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

He speaks, and, listening to His voice,
New life the dead receive,
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
The humble poor believe.

Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind, behold your Savior come,
And leap, ye lame, for joy.

In Christ your Head, you then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.

Glory to God, and praise and love
Be ever, ever given,
By saints below and saints above,
The church in earth and heaven.

On this glad day the glorious Sun
Of Righteousness arose;
On my benighted soul He shone
And filled it with repose.

Sudden expired the legal strife,
’Twas then I ceased to grieve;
My second, real, living life
I then began to live.

Then with my heart I first believed,
Believed with faith divine,
Power with the Holy Ghost received
To call the Savior mine.

I felt my Lord’s atoning blood
Close to my soul applied;
Me, me He loved, the Son of God,
For me, for me He died!

I found and owned His promise true,
Ascertained of my part,
My pardon passed in heaven I knew
hen written on my hearWt.

Look unto Him, ye nations, own
Your God, ye fallen race;
Look, and be saved through faith alone,
Be justified by grace.

See all your sins on Jesus laid:
The Lamb of God was slain,
His soul was once an offering made
For every soul of man.

Awake from guilty nature’s sleep,
And Christ shall give you light,
Cast all your sins into the deep,
And wash the Æthiop white.

Harlots and publicans and thieves
In holy triumph join!
Saved is the sinner that believes
From crimes as great as mine.

Murderers and all ye hellish crew
In holy triumph join!
Believe the Savior died for you;
For me the Savior died.

With me, your chief, ye then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.

I know that this song is a bit legthy but worth reading and hearing.

DId you get the FREE Ebook about Picky Eaters?

So, I heard about this free Ebook from The Happy Housewife about feeding picky eaters.  I got my copy and can't wait to read it!  I only hope that she has a chapter about feeding husbands that are picky eaters!

My kids, especially the boys, can be VERY picky eaters.  Sometimes I feel like Little Bits is living on cheese sticks, cereal bars and rice milk.  Oh and blueberries!  And apple sauce.

What do you all feed your picky eaters??  For me, I think my when all else fails food is PB & J's, bananas and applesauce.

TOS Crew: Maestro Classics

We were blessed to receive the Peter and the Wolf audio CD from Maestro Classics to review for the TOS Crew.  I can remember liking Peter and the Wolf as a child, so I was glad to be able to introduce it to my kids.

Photobucket

Peter and the Wolf is children's story that was written by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936.  It is about a boy named Peter who lives with his grandfather.  Young Peter disobeys his grandfather, climbs over the garden gate and runs into the very wolf that his grandfather had warned him about.  With the help of his friends, the duck, the bird and the cat the wolf is captured and taken to the zoo.

This musical story includes a narrator and orchestra, more specifically Stephen Simmon as conductor, Yadu as narrator and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, who I felt did a fantastic job introducing us to Peter, his friends, and the wolf.

Photobucket

All of the characters in the story are represented by a musical instrument:
  • Peter: Violin
  • Bird: flute
  • Duck: oboe
  • Cat: clarinet
  • Grandfather: bassoon
  • Wolf: French horns
  • Hunters: woodwind theme, with gunshots on timpani and bass drum
Maestro Classic's Stories in Music are a wonderful way to introduce children, that may be somewhat reluctant, to classical music.  The story and instruments definitely draw you in and create an interest to hear more.   The Stories in Music are wonderful for family listening, as well as for homeschoolers.

Photobucket

This audio CD, which has about 68 minutes of playing time, not only includes Peter and the Wolf, but several extras:
  • Introduction
  • Peter and the Wolf - with Narrarator and Orchestra
  • About the Composer - Prokofiev
  • A Russian Peter
  • About the Music
  • Peter and the Wolf - Instrumental Version
  • Invitation to Gradfather's Party
  • Kalinka

You may listen to samples HERE.

For $16.98 you will receive the Peter and the Wolf CD along with a 24 page booklet, that includes lots of educational extras and fun games.  We really liked the one that has you match up the character in the story to the instrument that represents it.

The Stories in Music series includes several other stories:

The Tortoise and the Hare
The Story of Swan Lake
Juanita the Spanish Lobster
Casey at the Bat
Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel

Each of the Stories in Music CD's are also available for $16.98.

To see what my fellow crew mates are saying about Maestro Classics please click HERE.

We received the Peter and the Wolf audio at no charge for review purposes.  Please know that this has not included my opinions about this product.

Yummy, Yummy Granola Bars

A friend of mine had told me about these granola bars a while back and I thought that I had made them but didn't like them.  I was talking on the phone with the same friend while coming up with my menu and I had mentioned granola bars.  She reminded me of this recipe and I told her I didn't care for them but thanks anyway.

You gotta love this girl, she tells me that I must have messed them up and I have to try them again.  We usually seem to have the same tastes in food (other than Squirrel Pot Pie, love you Mel but I no way am I eatin' that stuff!) so I decided to give them a whirl, again.

I gather my supplies, wheat germ and all and then I start off making a batch of these granola bars that I am sure I will not like.  THEN, after I mix up my batch and I tasted them (no they were not cooked yet) I realized these were NOT the bars I had tried before.  The other thing that I realized was that it would probably be in my best interest to double, no make that triple my batch.

I am soo- glad that I because they are a W O W ! ! !  The kids really liked them too!  They are chewy and oh so good!!

Three batches and much rambling later, here is the recipe....

Ingredients

2 cups rolled oats
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup wheat germ
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup raisins (optional)
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup honey
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions

I tried to mix this up with that there spoon but ended up just using my hands as the recipe says.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Generously grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.  In a large bowl, mix together the oats, brown sugar, wheat germ, cinnamon, flour, raisins and salt. Make a well in the center, and pour in the honey, egg, oil and vanilla. Mix well using your hands. Pat the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. (I found that this worked best if my hands were slightly wet, it keep all the ooey gooey stuff from sticking to my hands)

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven, until the bars begin to turn golden at the edges. Cool for 5 minutes, then cut into bars while still warm. Do not allow the bars to cool completely before cutting, or they will be too hard to cut.  One batch makes about 24 bars.

I had started cutting and then remembered that I forgot to take a fresh out of the oven picture.

Here is what they looked like before everyone started digging into them.

ENJOY!!
ps: don't forget to double, no make that triple your batch!

Menu Plan Monday

For some reason I have not been in the mood to cook lately, funny how that happens, especially when you have 4 little people and a husband that would like to be fed on a daily basis.  I am,however, starting to come out of this "food funk." This afternoon, while I was planing my menu and making my grocery list for the week, I had a great desire to do some baking.

I was so much in the mood that after schooling the kids, missing my afternoon nap, planning my menu, writing a grocery list and actually going to the grocery store I felt the need to come home and BAKE!  I made 3 batches of the YUMMIEST granola bars that I have ever had. My kids were asleep at this point and have not gotten to taste them, but I can't imagine them not LOVING them.  I will share the recipe for them tomorrow.

Here is our menu plan for the week, nothing fancy....

Wednesday
Breakfast Night - Eggs, Roast Beef Hash, Pancakes & Oranges

TOS Crew: Easy Classical

We were given a copy of  Easy Classical's Early Modern History Schedule for review for the TOS Crew.  This history schedule is available either in notebook form or for download.  We viewed the downloaded version for the review.

We did not actually use this history schedule but I have reviewed everything well enough to explain to you what I like and don't as well as how I would use it.  The Early Modern History Schedule uses a classical approach to learning.

The Early Modern History Schedule covers from Explorers to 1815 and can be taught to students in grades K -6th.   This is a very much like a teachers manual, it guides you through the school year using several other books.  This schedule is by no means a complete history curriculum.

After downloading the curriculum and reading the included instruction sheet I saw that the author, Sandra Williams, recommends reading the Well Trained Mind by Susan Wise Bauer.  The sections that she specifically mentions are those on the Grammar Stage and the How to Do It, as these will help you to set up notebooks for your children for the school year.

I appreciate that Sandra seems to be very realistic and tells you up front that you will NOT be able to complete every thing on the schedule and that it is OK.  I don't know about you but that really puts me at ease and helps me to not beat myself up when I have not checked off every little thing.  Thanks Sandra!

She goes further to explain that this year is "jammed packed with a variety of projects, and lessons" and to feel free to pick and choose what works best for your family. Another sigh of relief!  Hands on projects are wonderful, kids usually LOVE them and they seem to seal the deal as far as helping children remember what they have just learned.  I always thinks hands on projects are a great compliment to any study. This is schedule incorporates several of the History Pockets into the lessons.  You can view a sample lesson HERE.

There are 36 weeks of lessons included in this schedule along with 45 pages of charts, sheets, and helps.  Weekly lessons also include review questions, quizzes, a shopping list for the following week and detailed instructions on how to use the schedules and the books that accompany it.

This schedule is right up my alley and very similar to what we are already doing.  I really love to have a guide and then several books to pull information from.  I love to use a mix of reference type books, historical fictions and reference books that have a story like tone to them.

Just to give you a better idea, here are the books that would be used with this schedule (purchased separately):

Veritas Press Explorers
Story of the World Vol. 2
Story of the World Vol. 3
Story of the 13 Colonies
Story of the Great Republic
History of US: First Americans
History of US: 13 Colonies
History of US: From Colonies to County
History of US: New Nations

You can purchase your own copy of Easy Classical's Early Modern History Schedule, either for download for $29.95 or in notebook form for $35.95.

Easy Classical also offers full curriculum's for grades K-6th, science schedule as well as other history schedules, which can be viewed on the Easy Classical website.

To see what other TOS Crew members are saying about Easy Classical please click HERE.

Please note that we received Easy Classical's Early Modern History Schedule free of charge for review purposes, but this did not influence my opinions of this product.

Holy, Holy, Holy

Words by Reginald Heber

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who was, and is, and evermore shall be.

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!

This is one of the songs that I imagine the saints will be singing at the throne of God.

Saturday Solutions - Salad Fixin's Bar

Back in December we had some friends over for dinner after church.  I had made Baked Cavatini, one friend brought salad and another bread.

My friend Robin arrived with her salad green washed and ready to go in a salad spinner and THEN she pulled out a veggie tray.  This veggies tray was FULL of salad fixin's!!  I am sure that she probably thought I was a real dork, LOL, because I keep going on and on about how great of an item it was (because it really was a great idea).

She had this the fixin's bar filled with shredded carrots, green olives, raisins, and lots of other goodies.  Oh, and in the center, FETA CHEESE!

Let me tell you why I love this idea and how I am incorporating it into my world.  First of all I really NEED to be eating more salads again and I by nature can be a little lazy and don't like to have to chop up all these veggies each time I want a salad.  AND mixing your greens along with everything else only seems to last a day, maybe two before slime starts setting in.

If this doesn't make you want to run off and eat a salad I don't know what will!

When you chop up your goodies and place them into the divided veggie tray, you have killed two birds with one stone so to speak (FYI no birds were harmed during the making of this salad).  Your veggies are ready to go and the best part is they stay not slimy longer.  See, it's the two bird thing!

For those of you wondering what's in my fixin's bar, I have green olives, broccoli slaw, green onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, shredded carrots and of course FETA.  If I had more slots I would had added sunflower seeds and raisins.

What kind of goodies do you put in your salads??

Weekly Wrap Up

This was our first week back after our winter break.  Things went pretty well, considering.

I started a new routine with the kids (and self) this week and I am thinking that is going to take some getting used to, for all of us.  Things really do run much smoother and I am much happier if we have a plan and focus on completing it each day.  Our routine includes chores, reading time, school times, quiet/nap times, computer times and the like.   We had a few snags since I am doing physical therapy (for my neck) 3 mornings a week, but we accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish.

I haven't talked much about our curriculum for a while but we are still using MFW, along with a few supplements, and loving it.  We are doing Creation to Greeks this year and I am really diggin' all of the old testament studies.  This week we studied the plagues that the Lord sent upon Egypt when the Pharaoh would not let God's people go.  As I was read scripture in Exodus the children and I would talk about what we were reading, well, everyone except Little Bits, he would usually just pelt Joe O's at us.  The kids keep a Bible/History notebook so they would draw a picture of each plague to go into their notebook.

We have been using some of Diana Waring's Ancient Civilization curriculum, mostly the workbook and the audio cd's, and this week we sung her song about the plagues to the tunes of Camptown Races.  That was AWESOME!  I gave the girls 2 challenges, one to do this week and one for next.  I told them that I wanted them to write their own song about the Egyptian plagues, this should be no problem and lots of fun for them because they are ALWAYS writing songs about something.  They also need to put on a news broadcast about the plagues for their daddy and I.  The only requirements that I gave them were to do one this week and one next and I also told them they had to include their brothers.  The boys could be frogs or locust or something : )

I have been wanting to start incorporating character traits into our studies and this week I FINALLY did!!  Yay!  This week we talked about loyalty.  We talked about what it means to be loyal and ways that we can show loyalty to others.

We studied comparative and superlative words, worked on fractions, and had spelling words with a french origin.  We have been enjoying some really cool online games that we are reviewing for the TOS Crew, which I will be telling you all about real soon.

For Health and Science we studied blood and the immune system.  We are working on a book about blood and we learned alot about the different types of blood cells and what they do.  We learned some pretty amazing facts about the body which the Lord has so miraculously created!  Then we followed that us with a Moody Science video that taught us about the immune system, this was by far the coolest science video I have seen so far (more about this later).  After watching the video and reading from our book, the girls draw pictures of blood cells and viruses for their health notebook.

Friday is our day off so we are going to be doing a little house cleaning and we will probably make gingerbread houses because we just never got to them.  At least we are doing better them last year when we didn't get to them until MARCH.  Yes, MARCH!

I also believe we might get a little snow tomorrow and if we do we will be making these really neat 3D snowflakes.

TOS Crew: Math Facts Now

Photobucket

As a member of the TOS Crew we were given Math Facts Now! for review.  This is an educational math facts program that drills children in the basic math facts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

 Photobucket

Math Facts Now, as their website says..."is simple yet effective."

Here is what I liked about it:
  • This program picks up on the facts that your children are struggling with.
  • I think it is wonderful that if a problem is missed they have to type it over, not just the answer but the whole problem.  AND the program allows you to select how many times the student has to type the problem correct before moving on, up to ten times.  I love this, my kids. not so much.
  • Math Facts Now also allows you to design your own lessons.  You can choose addition, subtraction, multiplication or division and then you can even choose which numbers to work with.  I really like that I can really customize different lessons for each child.
  • I like that once I enter a child's name, the program will keep track on their progress.  The progress report shows the date, lesson they worked on, time spent with the lesson, and how many problems they got right and wrong.  AWESOME!!  This is great for multiply reasons, one it shows me what they are learning and what they are not getting PLUS it is wonderful to print out for the end of the year portfolio.
  • The program has the option to offer a reward when the child has completed the lesson.  I did not do this but I thought it was a cool feature.
  • I was very happy that I could add multiple children to program.
I really do like this program, it is affordable, simple and it gets the job done.  They only thing I could think of in the "something I didn't like" department was I wish they had some games with in the program.  The Math Facts Now website says that they didn't want to rely on cartoon characters to entertain children rather than educate then and I do get that, BUT my kids learn alot from "games" too.  I think even a little game at the end of each lesson completed, like a reward of sorts would be a wonderful addition to this already great product.  Like I said, I really do like this product and would recommend it.

In my opinion, this product is not really grade specific.  The program covers addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, so as your child works on those areas in their core math program they would use Math Facts Now to reinforce the facts they are already learning.

You can purchase your own Math Facts Now either on CD ROM or on Download both cost $15.95, but the CD has an additional $3.95 added for shipping and handling.

We received this product free of charge for review purposes only.  We were not paid in any way and the opinions expressed here are my own.

Menu Plan Monday

We just started back to school this week after a nice long winter break so while we are getting back into the swing of things I decided to keep food really simple.  I had really good  intentions of stocking my freezer full of healthy homemade casseroles while we were on break.  I even still have the basket of all my "freezer" cookbooks still sitting next to my spot on the sofa where I perused them for a few hours and yeah, that is about where it ended.  So much for good intentions, I guess there is always Spring Break, right!   and on with the menu....

Monday
Hot Dog Casserole

Tuesday
Creamy Potato Soup w/ Ham Sandwiches

Wednesday
Layered Cheesy Salsa Enchiladas

Thursday
BBQ Chicken Legs, Mashed Sweet Potatoes and Mixed Veggies, Greens

Friday
Tacos (because we never got around to making them last week), Corn, Black Beans & Rice

Saturday
Spaghetti & Homemade Meatballs

Sunday
Meatloaf , Potatoes and Carrots

TOS Crew: Positive Action For Christ

We were given the opportunity to review for Positive Action For Christ, more specifically we reviewed the 5th grade Curriculum called Possessing the Land.

Possessing the Land is an Old Testament survey that goes from Genesis to the minor prophets, which ends in Habakkuk.

Here are the things that I liked:
  • I really liked that even though it was designed for a 5th grader, I had no problem using this program with all of my children.  The younger children did more listening and drawing of the things that they heard, while the older 2 were more capable of working in the workbook.
  • I liked how everything was laid out for me.  Each lesson was set up in a way that was simple to understand and just as easy to implement.  The teachers guide explains your Target Truth, which is the main point of the lesson.  They give you Teaching Strategies, Character Trait Activities and some lessons include Additional Teaching Suggestions.
  • Selected scripture is suggested for memorization for each lesson, I thought this was great!
  • This curriculum not only includes a study of the Old Testament, but it includes a suggested music curriculum.  Each month, new hymns and choruses are introduced.  I liked this very much, because other than choir, music can unintentionally get pushed to the side.
  •  We liked the workbook that accompanied the study.  Some of the activities include answering questions, looking up scripture, charts, maps, fill in the blanks and crossword puzzles, which of course my kids LOVE!
  • There are 35 Lessons in this curriculum so you could use it for an entire school year.

As far as things I didn't care for, I can't really think of anything.  I think it is a worthy study and I am thankful that it was given to us to review.  I would definitely recommend it to other families for homeschooling or just as a family devotional.

The Possessing the Land study is available through Positive Action for Christ.  The teacher's manual is $33.95 and the student manual is $12.95.

Action For Christ offers Bible Curriculum grades Kindergarten through 6th Grade:

Each of the books listed above have download samples for both the teacher manuals and student manuals, you will find them on the links I have provided for you above.  They also offer separate curriculum for Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers. Please see what other TOS Crew Mates are saying about Positive Action For Christ.

We received this product free of charge from Positive Action For Christ for review purposes only.  We were not paid in any way and the opinions expressed here are my own.

Saturday Solutions - The Ultimatest Grocery List

It dawned on me the other day that I have NEVER shared my grocery list print out with you all, or at least I don't think I have.

For several years now I have been using the Ultimatest Grocery List because it is absolutely AWESOME!!  I printed one out long ago and just make several copies at a time.  I of course occasionally lose my master and have to print a new one.   On their website they have a deluxe grocery list as well as a vegetarian one .

I LOVE how just about everything that you can think of it right there in front of you and all you have to do is check, check, check!!  How easy is that!
